Just in time to encourage those mourning the impending end of the Yellowstone season - Peter F. sent in this nice pic of a very healthy looking Shields brown taken within the past few weeks, and he also provided an interesting comment about a recent excursion to the upper Big Hole….
Here is a pic of one of the bigger browns I got on the Shields. I also have a nice pic of a sizeable brookie I got on the Upper Big Hole. BTW, the reach I fished was above wisdom, below Jackson, and I think it is one of those pretty dewatered stretches in the summer. Of the 3+ miles I hiked I only had two productive holes, but both produced 7 fish, and a few were upwards of 16”. The pic I have is of one close to that size. I got into four more in three other bits of habitat, but mostly the river seemed barren. And all the fish looked like they had a pen blow up in their mouths, as if their mouths were ink stained.
We’re seeking comment on that from our local fisheries guys and gals, and will update when we hear something back, obviously a black mouth makes you think of a Chinook….Thanks for the nice pic Peter…..
