With the closure of the Park’s fishing season yesterday - several of our hard core Yellowstone fishing buddies are in mourning, while I would imagine shops and guides in Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho surrounding the Park have heaved a bittersweet sigh of relief.
For those who just can’t put the gear away just yet - there’s still lots of fishing to be done in Montana this late fall, some very good fishing in fact. Our sister site Best Fly Fishing Montana (this link will take you right to the report blog) is busy, and will continue to post reports on the major Montana river fisheries we follow over there (17 major river systems plus some lesser know but interesting waters).
There’s even still some dry fly fishing to be done on several Montana waters - we just updated the Bighorn for instance today - the astounding Black Caddis hatch over there appears to be about done, but there are still baetis coming off consistently. Of course you’ll be spending most of your fall fishing time nymphing and pitching streamers, but it’s nice to have the option.
Many rivers in the state have had banner years (the Beaverhead for example) and are still fishing very well for the big boys this fall.
Take heart, there are still some good, no make that great, options out there…..
