As we ease into late fall - you might even argue early winter with the new snow in the hills above Bozeman this afternoon - it’s time to start thinking about midges again.

For many years the mere thought of tiny, very dark flies attached to miniscule tippets made me uneasy, and I’d usually find some excuse to fish with some other less useful fly while my (few, interestingly) midge savvy buddies caught fish.

Midges are one of those categories that are not well understood by many adept fly fishermen, and while we’re anywhere close to being considered experts on midges, let’s look together at some useful information over the next week or 10 days.
