Continuing our series on midges….
For those who just can’t stand to not speak in Latin when discussing bugs (and we’ve heard from several this week already) - the term midge is most often used to speak of several families of insects in the order Diptera, which refers to two winged flies. Probably the most oft discussed family in this order is the family Chironomidae. There are several thousand species of midges that are present in the favored cold waters of North America, and for practical purposes in our minds (and the minds of many others) there are just too many to try and differentiate.
We’ll focus on more practical aspects of midges from here on out….
