Tom Remington authored a very interesting piece on the Black Bear Blog yesterday on the efficacy (usefulness or effectiveness) of bear spray in detering a bear attack.  The post is titled Bear Spray vs. Bullets, and while written more or less from a hunter’s perspective, anyone who spends time in the backwoods in bear country should probably take a gander at the article and at least look at the data presented.  He does a pertty thoughtful job, and while we’re believers in bear spray, we agree that the hard data testing it’s efficacy is pretty skimpy.  There’s lots of anecdotal reporting out there, typically on websites owned by bear spray manufacturers.
