Continuing our series on midges….
Can you really match the midge hatch?
There’s alway people out there who will argue a point, and so let’s look at both side of the argument…
Many midge experts out there argue that you can and should try to match the midge hatch. The core of the argument is that because so many midges are available at any one time, our target trout can get very selective.
When we’re on the river and midges are rolling, our mentor drilled it into us that you should seine, and do the best you can to match the size, color, and overall appearance of the most common midge you see. Granted, easier said than done, though it does help - and here’s an example of why. On a lot of rivers there are more than one predominant midge hatch - take the Bighorn for example this past summer.
For a period there were two different sized midges coming off at different times of the morning, and fish were keying into the different sizes pretty specifically (here’s a link to one of our reports generated back in early October). You’ll be more successful if you can match size and color in particular.
