Continuing our series on midges…..

Most commonly you’re going to be fishing larva and pupal patterns under a small strike indicator, though you want to make your indicator as inconspicuous as possible (yarn or roll on foam).  Using a CDC midge emerger (or even another very small dry fly) can make sense, and gives your target trout another option for dinner.  Some folks we fish with argue that using fluorocarbon tippets really makes sense here given the tendency of fluorocarbon to sink.

I must admit I’m not very good at the greased leader technique - it can work well too, though it is optimal on still waters and very slow currents.   Personally I find that I can see the entry point of the “greased” floating leader into the surface film much better in low light situations.

A good friend and mentor is a proponent of sight nymphing with midges - this is a zen like skill that requires keen vision, good reflexes, and a bit of luck (don’t forget sharp hooks too).
