Even the Boss Has a Close Call Now and Then…..
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commissioner Vic Workman survived a close encounter with a grizzly bear Sunday when hunting north of Whitefish. It appears he and a friend came upon a grizzly burying a dead deer, the grizzly charging from 30 feet away.
Workman apparently yelled “whoa bear, whoa bear, whoa” before firing a shot from the hip with his rifle - they assumed the bear was hit but it never slowed or stopped as it veered away and escaped.
No trace of the bear was found upon a later search, and we’re not sure if they’ll be recommending the “whoa bear” chant on the FWP web site anytime soon. Kinda makes you wonder if they were carrying bear spray doesn’t it?
